<nowiki>**</nowiki>Using the Lorebook to Support Continuity**

The Lorebook is an essential part of establishing and maintaining the reality in which your story takes place. If you update the Lorebook with the following information, you’ll have a much more consistent result any time you generate a new chapter.

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Chapter Summaries

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Characters

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Components

<nowiki>*</nowiki>Chapter Summaries*

The Lorebook generates Chapter Summaries automatically in most cases. It remains one chapter behind the story’s chapters in this way: When you have written Chapter One, the summary box will be empty; when you prompt to generate Chapter Two, the summary box for Chapter One will be automatically filled.

You may auto-generate or manually fill the summary box for a chapter that appears blank in the Lorebook. It can be helpful to check any auto-generated summaries and manually add the plot points or character development events that are most important if they are not adequately covered by the summary.

To ensure the changes become part of the record the Lorebook holds, click the “update summary” button for each chapter after making additions or changes.

What this does:

The AI checks the chapter summaries even after it no longer remembers the specific content of previous chapters. With a limited “memory” for what has happened already, these summaries provide the framework for any history the AI uses as a reference for future text generations. Updating the Chapter Summaries ensures that your later chapters will more accurately reflect the events and growth established in earlier prompts and chapter generations.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>Characters*

The Lorebook keeps a list of your characters as they enter the story. At the beginning, it will have any characters you created or added during the initial prompt. If you’re using characters that are based on a Character Component, those Components will be referenced beside the relevant Character in your Lorebook. If characters are auto-generated during the story, they will appear in the Character list along with a brief description of the character as the AI imagined them. You can change the description of a character, add to it, or remove information at any time. Be sure that you click “update character” after making changes to save the details.

As your story progresses, character development will inevitably occur, to the perception of the creator or the reader, even if it is only a series of experiences the character has had during the story itself. To ensure that later chapters reflect this development accurately, check your Lorebook after each chapter and update it with any important developments that you want the AI to remember as it continues to generate new chapters.

Saving changes to a character in your Lorebook does NOT alter the permanent component on which the character is based. This allows you to use a Character Component in many stories and adjust it based on the individual story and situation each time.

Renaming a Character:

You can rename a character at any time. It requires a few steps to complete the process, and it is far easier to do this when only the first chapter has been written, but you could conceivably do this at any point. It is advisable to duplicate your story before you begin, just in case you encounter difficulties and wish to backtrack.

Here is how:

1. Go into the Lorebook to the Character list and alter the name of the character in the character name box. Change the name in the character’s description if it appears there. Click “Save Character.”

2. Open the first chapter in which the character appears. Select all text and choose “Rewrite.” Type instructions for the rewrite, such as “Replace all instances of Elara Voss with Emmersyn Cholmondeley. Change nothing else.” Ensure the newly generated text reflects the name correctly before Saving.

3. Regenerate or adjust the Lorebook Chapter Summary for the corresponding chapter to reflect the new name.

4. Continue doing this for all chapters in which that character appears or is discussed.

5. To be thorough, check your other character descriptions which might reference relationships with the character whose name is now different and update if needed.

Notes:

<nowiki>*</nowiki> You may need to refresh prompt suggestions after making and saving these changes in order to receive prompt suggestions that use the character’s new name, but going forward, you may use only the new name of the character instead of the old one.

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Changing the name of a character that is based on a Character Component uses the same process and does not alter the permanent Character Component that is referenced.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>Components*

The Components section of the Lorebook includes a list of the individual Components you have chosen for your story, aside from Character Components. This includes the Components you selected in your initial creation, as well as any Components you add in subsequent chapters prompts.

If you wish to make adjustments to the content or the application of a Component for the sake of an individual story, you may do so in this section of the Lorebook without altering the permanent Component. If you do make changes to the details of Component in the Lorebook, you should click “Save Component” on each one that you alter.

For maintaining continuity, you may want to periodically look at the list and remove Components that you don’t want used in future chapters so they do not trigger unintentionally.

For your inline instructions in brackets about upcoming tasks for fixing up the place, I’d omit them entirely and use Story Plan if you know where they’ll roughly fall. It’s just inviting the model to bring it in as narrative or foreshadowing.

Tokens are the units into which an AI divides text for processing. A single token is roughly four characters, but this can include spaces.

For the purposes of Red Quill, all that matters is that there is a maximum total of tokens, called the "context". A simple way to think about that context is to imagine the storage on a phone. You can fill it up with pictures, but then when you try to download movies or songs, there won't be any room. If you download several movies, you might not have room for many pictures.

The context has to be divided between the packaging that RQ uses for the prompts, plus all the users components, plus the prompt ''plus the reply''. Therefore, if there are many components and a very large prompt, there is less room for the reply. In practice, the context is likely large enough to handle many components and large prompts, but like everything there is going to be a limit.

Red Quill does not have a huge, multibillion-dollar data center of their own that hosts their own AI. They pay (several) other companies to access a large AI. It looks like they are using some version of DeepSeek, which is a pretty good choice from what I know. The problem with a lot of big models is that they are more censored and repressed than an 80-year-old Orthodox Catholic Nun sitting in the first pew. We've all had experiences with this with even this AI, not to mention others. DeepSeek is more relaxed about the guardrails on the whole. There are ways to cut these guardrails out (called "abliberating"), but that means hosting the model yourself, and generally means using a smaller (ie. less capable) model to begin with.

The big thing to take away from this is that the RQ staff have absolutely no control of the AI, what it says, or how it operates. They cannot "reprogram" the AI, cannot alter it, cannot make changes to it. They can, however, ''influence'' it (as we'll discuss below).

At 0.0 you get something like a "Full House" episode: staid, boring as hell, so predictable that you could probably recite a new episode along with the actors. 1.0 is like a coked up teenager writing a new episode for "The Young Ones" after 6 espressos--anything can, and probably will happen. Standard is likely set to a low temperature, and the more advanced writers are up around 0.6 to 0.8. Beyond that, you usually get [[wikipedia:Dada|dada-ist]] madness. So...maybe some big news coming to The Rubric soon. Fingers crossed!

In the meantime, I've stopped some on updating the site while I reconsidered what I was doing. I had originally envisioned it as a regular wiki, but it seems I misjudged the willingness of the average person to pitch in. I kind of thought there would be a handful--say 6-10 people--who would be interested in helping.

I was wrong. Very wrong.

I also thought that I would fill it out with the base information from the site, at least initially, as I thought that was what a wiki would be.

Again--wrong.

However, true to form, I summoned all my powers as a mediocre white man and forged ahead, undaunted. I've been thinking about putting in things that would actually be useful, even if they are not necessarily known to be true (because I can only know so much without inside information). As an example, my demystifying of Red Quill--largely correct, but probably off a little bit. Certainly close enough for the average user. Likewise, maybe a page explaining some of the most common things (like the poorly named "Story Share Code") and questions from the subreddit/chat. You know--the actually useful shit that people need instead of rehashing the obvious. We'll see what happens this week, but either way I will probably be doing that. The tide doesn't conquer the cliff face by crashing through it. It does it bit by bit, slowly, steadily, ceaselessly...

For some time I've felt that Red Quill needed a URL shortener, because those links are a touch unwieldy. I mean... https://www.redquill.net/story/bqa941-zen-and-the-art-of-relationship-maintenance Get the heck out of here with that nonsense!

So with a little help from my friends, I have added a URL Shortener to The Rubric, the [[Penknife]]. It is limited to only creating links to the wiki or to Red Quill, so I don't have to worry about some loony using it for spam and scams and stuff. I'm a little frightened of turning the r/redquill community loose on it. There are a lot of users on Red Quill. Even if they are only a few bytes each, 30,000,000 links is not an insignificant issue. So far, though, it's been used....3 times. By me. :|

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you, though. There are old pilots and bold pilots....

Welcome to <span style="color: #800020;">'''The Scarlet Letters'''</span>, the blog of The Rubric. My name (for here, anyway) is The Dented Pen, but you can call me Denty, or Pendy, or Your Holiness. Well, maybe not the last one.

There was not an adequate wiki out there for Red Quill, and the community was hungering for one. Users were constantly asking questions in chat and in the subreddit that weren't explained on the site, and they didn't have anywhere to turn. Because of the nature of the site, and subsequently the wiki, normal wiki options like Fandom and Miraheze weren't really available to us. Like Hester Prynne, I wasn't going to let a bunch of uptight Puritans stop me, so I just made one myself. And this is that wiki.

It's just little ole me manning the Scriptorium right now, so information will be filled in slowly, but I am trying to concentrate on the [[Frequently Asked Questions|FAQ]] and [[Just the Tip|Tips]] pages to make as much useful information as possible available.
