The problem with the existing kinks/tags list is, in part, that the site is trying to use the same list as both tags and categories. This fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of both of these items.

Categories are a way of ''grouping'' content – deciding which items will sit next to each other. In a grocery store, this would be the large signs over sections of the store: Butcher, Dairy, Frozen, Breakfast, Snacks, etc.

Tags, on the other hand, are a way of ''labeling'' content – deciding what is inside the content. Jerky contains meat, salt, and spices (all on the label) but it is kept in the Snacks aisle.

While it is possible to the use the tags list as the categories, it will lead to a great deal of confusion, and make it difficult for a user to find the right content. “Scissoring” is listed in the Kinks/Categories under “Fetish”, but in lesbian there is also “Lesbian Scissoring” (I guess to differentiate it from transmen scissoring? Or maybe crafting/tailoring?)

Kinks/Categories should be what are listed in the site menu down the left hand side, under “Discover”.

Tags should be the constituents of a story—the ingredients that make a specific story. Tags are also what should show up in Infinite Kink.

Explanations:

* Fanfiction is entirely too large to breakdown in Categories; that would be better handled with tags. How that list of tags will be created is another discussion entirely. I think allowing users to create tags would not end well, but it’s asking a little much of the developers to add in a tag for every fictional universe in existence. The manga additions alone would likely dwarf the rest of RQ altogether. Maybe just giving the major fandoms tags would be good? That will still be dozens, but doable.
* Gender Change is in “Body” even though the most common form of Gender Change erotica (as far as I know) is sudden change brought on through fantastical means (potion/spell/futuristic tech). It is listed there because it is an entirely separate thing than transsexual bodies. There aren’t a lot of gender-confirming surgery stories.
* I removed DDLG even though it is more common, and replaced it with the gender-neutral version Caregiver/Little (CG/L), simply to encompass a wider range. These can be differentiated with tags.
* Is there really wedgie erotica? I mean, Rule 34 says there is, but still.
* I listed “Futanari” as a category to specifically refer to hermaphrodite stories (ie. A character with both male and female sexual organs). This is distinct from a trans individual, who may combine secondary characteristics (breasts/body hair) but only one set of sexual organs at a time.

Explanations:

* Fanfiction is entirely too large to breakdown in Categories; that would be better handled with tags. How that list of tags will be created is another discussion entirely. I think allowing users to create tags would not end well, but it’s asking a little much of the developers to add in a tag for every fictional universe in existence. The manga additions alone would likely dwarf the rest of RQ altogether. Maybe just giving the major fandoms tags would be good? That will still be dozens, but doable.
* Gender Change is in “Body” even though the most common form of Gender Change erotica (as far as I know) is sudden change brought on through fantastical means (potion/spell/futuristic tech). It is listed there because it is an entirely separate thing than transsexual bodies. There aren’t a lot of gender-confirming surgery stories.
* I removed DDLG even though it is more common, and replaced it with the gender-neutral version Caregiver/Little (CG/L), simply to encompass a wider range. These can be differentiated with tags.
* Is there really wedgie erotica? I mean, Rule 34 says there is, but still.
* I listed “Futanari” as a category to specifically refer to hermaphrodite stories (ie. A character with both male and female sexual organs). This is distinct from a trans individual, who may combine secondary characteristics (breasts/body hair) but only one set of sexual organs at a time.
* I have removed shemale as offensive
* My distinction between the “kink” and “fetish” categories: by definition, all fetishes are kinks, but not all kinks are fetishes. It is a matter of degree. A kink is something extra that you add for fun—like whipped cream on a brownie. Technically, a fetish is something you require for gratification. What I did instead was use “kink” for little extras—things that didn’t really fit into other categories, but were just fun. Fetishes were for the slightly farther-out items. * “Giant Cock” is a really big penis. “Monster Cock” is a penis of any size on a Wendigo, sasquatch, Deep One, or rancor. (fun fact: gorilla penises are usually less than two inches long when erect. So I really mean '''any size''')

It looks like the list originally was created in two different ways: one method was to go to porn and erotica sites and write down the categories; the other was to think of a category—Gay, for instance—and then copy all the other categories under that one (Gay Bondage, Gay First Time, Gay ABDL).

So those are my thoughts. I think a revamp like this would help make the site easier to use and do a lot to increase engagement and help users find stories by other authors that they might enjoy.
